Adventure with Daphine has introduced cultural tourism in Uganda and has added it to its tourism packages. Across several African cultures, cattle are not for the ordinally clansmen. It is a great signal of hard work and endurance. The long horned Ankole is one of the ancient magnificent cattle breeds in Africa with roots of the Chwezi empire. Ankole long horned cows are mainly found in western Uganda in the districts of Isingiro, Bushenyi, Ntungamo, Mbarara, Kiruhura, Kazo and many more. They are characterized by their long horns that rise up to eight feet from tip to tip.
Ankole cows are mainly reared for prestige or maintaining cultural heritage, income from sales, meat for home use and functions/ceremonies. Female cows are kept for milk production, heritage and bride price while males are kept purposely for income from sales. In the ancient Ankole setting, cows were also kept for social capital whereby they were used as a tool for keeping friendship. However, this is still a trend in Ankole where friendship is cemented by giving each other cows as a sign of love and commitment (okuhaana).
While on the Ankole cattle experience, we expect to go through the herdsman’s day today activities like; milking in the morning, releasing the cows from the kraal to the farm/pastures, taking them to the watering dam and later on driving them back to the kraal where they stay overnight. We will also be able to see various cattle related equipment that are used in Ankole homesteads like; milk pots {Ebyanzi}, churning gourds {Ebirere}, watering bucket {Icuba}, grazing stick {Enkoni}, and many more.
Furthermore, we will be able to learn the disease control practices like; spraying {Okwozya}, deworming {Okugaburra}, then farming practices like breeding strategy, labor division, ownership, naming of Ankole cows, calf management, security, beliefs, cattle and marriage, and many more. All these are farming practices used by the Ankole homesteads in maintaining their herds.
During the cultural experience, we will also be able to go for the banana growing and local brew experience in various parts of Uganda which is a big belief and norm in the history of most Ugandan cultures and good for agro-tourism experience.
The Batwa experience and nature walks is another experience we shall not afford to miss. These are communities that are mainly based in the south western parts of Uganda, mainly in Bwindi impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga national park, Kanungu district, to mention but a few.
These communities are considered to be critically endangered and are at the verge of extinction. They are alternatively referred to as pygmies meaning “short people” and have a rich and interesting culture dating many years back when they used to stay in forests, feeding and wild meat, fruits and plant roots.
At Adventure with Daphine, we’re excited to connect and collaborate with you, crafting unforgettable journeys that will inspire wanderlust and create lasting memories in the world of adventure travel.
